Snapshot
The Pangolakha Immersion is a one-of-a-kind nature, wildlife and cultural deep dive focussed on one small corner of Sikkim in the Eastern Himalayas. We will be exploring habitats, walking through villages, monasteries and seeking some specialist wildlife across a wide altitudinal range between 1500m and 4500m!
Overview
An exploratory journey through Zuluk and its surrounding high-altitude landscapes, this trip takes you deep into the Eastern Himalayas where nature, wildlife, and dramatic scenery come together. Nestled in the mountains, the state of Sikkim, once an independent kingdom until 1975, still retains its unique cultural and ecological identity. Home to a diverse mix of communities including the Bhutias, Lepchas, Gurungs, and Chhetris, much of the region remains untouched, with expansive forests and multiple protected sanctuaries.
This journey is designed with a focus on three key elements: the natural world, wildlife, and the varied Himalayan habitats. Expect slow, immersive walks through dense oak and rhododendron forests, high-altitude meadows, river valleys, and remote village trails – all offering excellent opportunities for birdwatching and observing the rich biodiversity of the region. Sikkim is renowned as a birding hotspot, and the areas we explore are particularly rewarding in this regard.
The diversity of habitats also gives us a chance to encounter elusive species such as the Himalayan Brown Goral, Musk Deer, Bhutan Flying Squirrel, Martens, small wild cats, and perhaps even rare pheasants, all set against the breathtaking backdrop of Mount Khangchendzonga, a sacred peak deeply revered by the people of Sikkim.
Accommodation for the trip is primarily at the Pangolakha Wilderness Home, and all travel will be in SUVs suited to mountain terrain. October offers clear skies and crisp air – moderately cold but free of tourist crowds, making it a perfect time to experience this lesser-visited corner of the Himalayas in peace.
