Snapshot
Overview
This five-day tour is designed to explore the Sundarbans Tiger Reserve – India’s largest mangrove ecosystem.
Spanning over 10,000 sq. km across India and Bangladesh, the Sundarbans is the world’s largest mangrove forest and a delta formed by the confluence of seven major rivers. It is one of the most fascinating and specialized landscapes in the country, best known as the only place where Royal Bengal Tigers live in saline waters and mangrove habitats. The Indian side of the Sundarbans, covering 4,267 sq. km, is estimated to support over 100 tigers.
Beyond tigers, this unique ecosystem is home to elusive lesser cats like the leopard cat, fishing cat, and jungle cat. Gigantic saltwater crocodiles bask on the muddy banks, while other notable mammals include the Irrawaddy River Dolphin, Smooth-coated and Small-clawed Otters, Spotted Deer, and Indian Wild Boar. The mangroves also support an exceptional diversity of birdlife, including the stunning Mangrove Pitta, and the country’s highest diversity of kingfishers: Brown-winged, Black-capped, Collared, Stork-billed Kingfishers, and more. The Buffy Fish-Owl, not seen elsewhere in India, is another special resident.
A complex network of seven main rivers and countless tidal channels defines this vast estuarine delta. Life here is harsh and full of challenges, both for the people and the wildlife, leading to animal behaviours that differ significantly from those observed in other forests.Over five days, we will navigate this fragile landscape by motorised boat, immersing ourselves in its beauty, observing its wildlife, and learning how local communities have coexisted with the forest and how deeply their livelihoods depend on its survival.
