Due West
Overview
Head to the far west of India into the state of Gujarat to experience a landscape that is varied, a culture that is vibrant, and wildlife seen nowhere else in the world.
From dry teak forests and expansive grasslands to salt deserts and coastal wetlands, Gujarat holds some of the country’s most distinct ecosystems. It is the last refuge of the Asiatic Lion, found in the scrub forests of Gir, where leopards, hyenas, and marsh crocodiles also roam. The open savannas of Velavadar are home to elegant herds of Blackbuck and rare predators like the Indian Wolf and Striped Hyena, while winter skies fill with thousands of harriers coming in to roost. To the north, the vast, stark beauty of the Rann of Kutch holds both ecological and cultural treasures – desert foxes dart across the cracked earth, flamingoes gather in saline lakes, and the Asiatic Wild Ass roams the flat horizon. Interspersed between wilderness experiences are visits to historic towns, ancient Harappan sites, and vibrant craft communities known for weaving and embroidery. Guests are hosted at a series of comfortable wilderness lodges and boutique heritage stays like the Rann Riders (or similar), ensuring an experience that’s as rich in comfort as it is in discovery.
